QNAP NAS enables remote accessibility for Home Networking Solutions to manage a remote solar power system

  • Background

Home Networking Solutions (HNS) specializes in network throughput improvements, digital signage and storage solution integration with QNAP NAS for backing up devices, streaming media, security surveillance and remote accessibility for small businesses.

  • Challenge

One of Home Networking Solutions' clients, MPC Engineering, has a solar power farm. As this farm is located in a rural location, they need remote access to monitor the status of their stand-alone generators and to obtain the statistics of the solar energy generated from the solar panels. Due to complicated router settings with various connection standards and protocols, it was time-consuming for HNS to set up remote access for each of their clients and there was no centralized management interface, resulting in lower work efficiency.

Solution

By using a QNAP TVS-682 NAS, Home Networking Solutions was able to run a Windows-based Virtual Machine (VM) in Virtualization Station to monitor the solar power system and can easily configure network settings for the VMs using the built-in Network & Virtual Switch application. HNS also uses the myQNAPcloud service for their employees and clients to gain remote access using various devices, providing easier accessibility and greater convenience. The TVS-682 also provides high-capacity storage potential, which is ideal for HNS' needs in storing large surveillance video footage and the solar system's statistics data.

  • Remote accessibility set-up made easy

Remote accessibility and network configurations were two challenges that HNS faced for this project. With QNAP's Virtualization Station allowing for hosting virtual machines on QNAP TVS-682 and with the Network & Virtual Switch application simplifying network deployment, HNS has avoided the need for complicated set-up while their clients can easily access the VM to manage their remote solar systems using web browsers from their office.

  • NAS as a surveillance system

HNS also uses QNAP's QVR Pro surveillance application on the TVS-682 to monitor the solar power system in the remote site. The clients can flexibly switch from live view or playback mode over the monitored area using the QVR Pro client software via web browsers or from mobile devices. If an event occurs, QVR Pro will also send notifications to the clients, ensuring they have complete oversight at all times.

  • High-capacities and expandable storage space

The TVS-682 has the potential for high data storage and is easily expandable to accommodate future data generated from the solar power system and their surveillance system. HNS also uses QNAP's block-based snapshots on the TVS-682 to provide fast and easy data backup and recovery in the event of unexpected data loss or potential malware attacks.

Benefits

With the TVS-682, HNS has a viable solution for remotely accessing and managing their client's portable off-grid solar power system. HNS reported that by using the TVS-682 their productivity and efficiency has increased by over 50%, while their overall deployment cost has been reduced. “The QNAP TVS-682 provides an all-in-one solution with high-capacity storage, surveillance and remote accessibility & manageability at an affordable budget.”
